President's Report

December:  A Time to Plan

The year is coming to a close.  With most years, we reflect: am I ready for a new year, to forget about this year? OR do I need to celebrate the fabulous year that we had?  I choose the latter.  Wow what a year.

This is not only a year worth celebrating, our 25 years of doing business in and across the bluegrass, but also a year of many firsts!

The first state-wide chapter of its kind.  The first annual report populated.  The inaugural Symposium, which was a massive success.  The first offering of scholarships to attend our events.  The first tremendous tour of our Capitol in Frankfort, where we were a unified voice for women in business.  The first time we have captured our content and streamed it LIVE for our members.  We also have brought on a power house Executive Director, Wendy Hall who will continue to enhance our mission across the Bluegrass.

When we began the year, we recognized that we, Women IN Business, have come a long way since needing a male co-signer and that was something that needed to be celebrated!  This year we went back to our mission:  to provide you the resources, information, organizations, and individuals for you to continue to break through barriers, overcome obstacles, and succeed in every facet of life.

This banner year wouldn’t have been possible without the many hours of dedication from your board of directors.  Many thanks to each and every one, they all had a strategic role to play in the success of 2017 and the continual enhancement of the mission.

Executive Committee:
Denise Jerome- Immediate Past President

Looking forward, our Chapter and Foundation could not be stronger.  We enter into 2018 with an action packed agenda and amazing board.  We plan to take our GROW program nationally.  We are the beneficiary of the Derby Diversity & Business Summit.  We are delivering on diversity and inclusion and forging partnerships across all spectrums of business.  We are also expanding our presence across Kentuckiana.  Our theme for 2018 is that you are at the heart of business- yes, YOU!  We recognize that our membership spans through all points in the business life cycle.  So whether you are surviving in business, striving in business, or thriving in business; NAWBO Kentucky has something for you.

If you haven’t considered joining us because of a misconception of who we are or what we do, I urge you to eliminate that misconception and reach out.  If you are currently a member but not engaged, I urge you to reach out and engage on the level that seems most appropriate for you.  We are here for you- we are a membership organization and we continue to want to give to our members.

NAWBO Kentucky Foundation Presidential Update

NAWBO Kentucky Foundation Update

It has been an honor to serve as President of the NAWBO Kentucky Foundation for the last two years. During that time, our ‘rock star’ Board of Directors worked hard to develop our long-term strategic pillars to advance the Foundation in the future. Education is at our core.

In addition, we have developed a new Vision statement which encompasses those pillars:

Leading the economic empowerment of women in business.

The Foundation has adopted a new identity and logo which helps distinguish the entity in the state of Kentucky.  These key community-facing elements will all help us continue to align with the Chapters goals and initiatives.

The Foundation’s 2018/2019 Board of Directors will be voted on and announced in mid-December 2017. A planning retreat is planned for February 2018 to map out our strategicroadmap.  Stay tuned for ways you can get involved with our Committees.

Finally, a giant Thank You to our 2016 & 2017 Board of Directors for a job well-done.

She Means Business

 Happy Holidays!

Women ARE the heart of growth in business, but with the Kentucky Region has a ways to go.  That's why we need YOU to champion the growth of women owned businesses in our region and why NAWBO Kentucky's 2018 theme will focus on the HEALTH of your business.  We need to make sure we are building strong businesses and paving the way to help others GROW their passion, ideas and businesses as well.  Susan Sobbott, President of American Express Global Commercial Payments states that  “Championing women-owned businesses strengthens our economy, individual communities and helps inspire the next generation of female entrepreneurs.” That's exactly what NAWBO Kentucky is about.

Unfortunately, when you review the  2016 State of Women Owned Business Report Commissoned by American Express OPEN (2007-2016 Trends), Kentucky is below average for women-owned business.  In an excerpt from the same study of 2017 it showed that Indianapolis and Charlotte, NC, neighboring metro cities, were both in the top 5 of metro areas that were increasing their economic clout.  The good news is that there is a lot of opportunity for us in the Kentucky Region.  But we need YOU on board to make Kentucky one of THOSE states. So we invite you to Join the Tribe!

NAWBO Kentucky, it's leaders and it's partners are dedicated to providing women in business the resources, information, organizations, and relationships to allow us to continue to break through barriers, overcome obstacles, and succeed personally, professionaly and politically based on personal goals and desires.  These tools and our voice; continuing to work with local, state and national organizations are what's needed to continue to move the Kentucky Region forward and build successful women-owned businesses.  As part of our committment NAWBO Kentucky will continue to partner with women business owners and corporate partners throughout the state this year.  We will continue to develop strategies in Lexington and take the tools and resources to Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky.  We have also had interest in Sommerset, Ky.  In addition, we will continue our pledge to diversity and inclussion and move towards assuring that our organization is representative of our communities.  As we grow our partnerships and bring additional resources to our members we look forward to continued growth on all levels for NAWBO Kentucky, our members and our partners.

So watchout 2018...we are coming for you!  NAWBO Kentucky will work hard to engage and encourage you to focus on personal health, the health of our businesses and building healthy community relationships. Because…She Means Business.  #shemeansbusiness

Cheers to a prosperous 2018!
