Introducing: Project Board Room
June 2017
President's Report
Everything you need is right here: NAWBO Kentucky
As a woman in business, a woman business owner, a leader in the community, a leader in your household, you are likely inundated with requests and pulled in multiple directions. I hear it all the time, there is no such thing as a business/life balance- instead it’s more of a blend. A crazy, wonderful, messy blend. When thinking of the resources necessary to accommodate this “blend,” I think of none other than our very own NAWBO and how valuable of a resource it is for every facet of life.
NAWBO was formed out of necessity 42 years ago, when women were denied access to valuable resources to help them achieve personally, professionally and politically. Now fast forward in today’s global market, NAWBO is still very much relevant in assisting women in accomplishing their goals. When you think about it, everything you need for business is right here, within NAWBO. That is access to resources, access to capital, access to decision makers, access to other organizations that can propel your business. Additionally, as women, facing the hurdles of this “blend” NAWBO also has key support systems in place to surround you with likeminded business leaders. Everything you need is right here! We often lose sight of the valuable content NAWBO provides, the access to other business leaders, the camaraderie with likeminded women, the programs that are in place to motivate, engage and lead! If you have every wondered why we are still going strong- many years later, it is because NAWBO continues to enhance the lives of women in business throughout the country. We are lucky to have a regional chapter with all of these wonderful benefits. Again, any and everything you may need is right here in NAWBO Kentucky. Are you maximizing the resources?

Relationships are About Finding a Connection
By Vanessa Pennoyer, Membership & HJI Supply Chain Solutions
“Relationships come down to finding a connection on some level. And the people I have learned the most from are the ones who are least like me.” – Mary Beth West, executive vice president, Kraft Foods
Do you ever get the cold call visit where someone just walks in your office or business and looks for some clue around your office to make a connection? Perhaps they’ve studied your social media page and know more about your feeds than you do? Are you constantly asked at events, “What do you do?” like they even care what you say after you’ve given them your business card.
It drives me crazy how a business card is somehow supposed to be your golden ticket for conversation. I purposely will keep a very limited amount of business cards with me because I value quality not quantity. Yet people will insist on giving you a card to meet their card distribution quota for the day even though you haven’t asked how to reach them for follow-up or even expressed interest for that matter. I have an appreciation for these efforts because sometimes folks don’t know a better way to “sell”, be a human, or give effort to anything more than the status quo.
Guess what…NAWBO is a relationship-based organization. They dig a little deeper to discover how to help each other with intention. Do what you say and say what you mean, one of my biggest pet peeves. Openness. Conversation. Meaning. Value. Friendship. These words connect you personally and professionally with goals towards what success looks like to you. Finding a connection on some level is easy with a woman majority organization, but taking the time to learn something different from someone least like you, takes courage. (Another reason I’m blessed to represent HJI, a women-owned, minority-owned, family-owned business). I haven’t met one member or potential guest member that didn’t carry the courage brand. I hope to see you at our next event and please contact me if you want additional information.

Congratulations to NAWBO member Colleen Clines of Anchal on receiving a grant from Women 4 Women!
Grant Recipient Highlight: Anchal Project
Anchal's dyeScape program is an unprecedented project that provides training and career opportunities in eco-friendly textile production to women exploited in the sex trade in Louisville. The project trains and hires women to grow, harvest and dye fabric with dye plants grown through a network of urban gardens on once vacant lots.
By offering alternatives to dangerous and exploitive work, Anchal helps women rediscover their dignity, independence and creativity in a financially rewarding way. Women 4 Women's funding will support two women with apprenticeships in natural dye production, as well as, new sewing machines and dye materials.
