President's Report

Breaking Barriers and Eliminating Misconceptions

As we round out the end of the calendar year, it is a great time to reflect on your personal and professional growth.  Remember back in January when we discussed our goals and objectives for the year? How often have you reflected on your accomplishments?

Looking at your NAWBO Kentucky / Southern Indiana chapter, we are doing the same, reflecting and celebrating.

This is not only a year worth celebrating, our 25 years of doing business across the bluegrass, but also a year of many firsts!  The first state-wide chapter of its kind.  The first annual report populated.  The inaugural Symposium.  The first offering of scholarships to attend our events.  The first time we have captured our content and streamed it LIVE for our members.  We also have brought on a power house Executive Director, Wendy Hall that will continue to enhance our mission across the bluegrass.

When we began the year, we recognized that we, Women IN Business, have come a long way since needing a male co-signer, but that we are not finished.  We continue to face many obstacles within our business, within our family, and within the community.  NAWBO provides you the resources, information, organizations, and individuals for you to continue to break through barriers, overcome obstacles, and succeed in every facet of life.  Moreover, NAWBO continues to eliminate the misconceptions and remain relevant in today’s society.

I am asked often, what is the return on my investment into this membership organization?  The answer is not simple.  I have personally experienced a return that I cannot even begin to monetize.  The relationships I have built; the friendships and the mentorships, the advocating for women in business, the access to decision makers, the connections with resources and organizations that I need, the educational element that keeps me up to date on everything in business, the affiliations with our affinity partners.  These are just a few examples of the return I have personally seen on my investment.

If you haven’t considered joining us because of a misconception of who we are, I urge you to eliminate that misconception and reach out.  If you are currently a member but not engaged, I urge you to reach out and engage on the level that seems most appropriate for you.  We are here for you- we are a membership organization and we continue to want to give to our members.  #shemeansbusiness

She Means Business

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style. – Maya Angelou

I believe that Ms. Angelou has it right and why I’m thrilled to have been selected as the new Executive Director of NAWBO Kentucky.  I have had a very successful career in sales and business development and over the years have found myself drawn to share time, talent an d treasure though the many fabulous not-for-profits in the region.  I have a passion to help women become engaged and create THEIR great life.  NAWBO Kentucky is a great “next step” for me to combine my professional talents with my passions and continue the journey of creating MY great life.

I’m excited that you are all a part of this journey with me and I look forward to meeting each of you, exploring what resources and support NAWBO can provide you and working with great partners that are committed to elevating women in business and providing the tools, resources and relationships that continue to spur the personal, professional and political growth that NAWBO is founded upon.

We’ve come a long way but we are not done yet.  So, get involved, share your ideas with us and let us know how we can help you get the most out of your NAWBO relationship.  As NAWBO Kentucky continues to grow I hope that you will consider being a part of that growth too…it’s going to be a great ride.  Because…She Means Business.  #shemeansbusiness

Committed to your success,

- Wendy Hall, NAWBO Kentucky Executive Director

Women's Entrepreneurship Day

Women's Entrepreneurship Day is the world's largest celebration of women entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, innovators and job creators, with the goal of empowering the four billion women on the planet and bringing hope to 250 million girls living in poverty. It is celebrated on November 19th every year.  In addition to recognizing the contributions of women to the economy, WED also strives to gather a think tank of women leaders, which will ultimately create an amplified merged message to expand businesses with social good initiatives in communities locally and globally.

While women attend college at the same rate or a higher rate than men, they do not lead more companies or create more small businesses. The WED movement strives to get more college students excited about careers in entrepreneurship and create a better pipeline for women to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors.

Women's Entrepreneurship Day Education Program Chair Kelly Chezum, vice president for external relations at Clarkson University, is part of a team of educators encouraging more colleges and universities to hold WED events on their campuses. Through this network, the group wants to bring attention to the contributions of women entrepreneurs and encourage participation by alumni and student delegates at WED's signature gathering at the United Nations in New York City on Thursday, Nov. 19, with entrepreneurs from around the world.
